Welcome to Not a Luxury Ltd. We are a nonprofit organization dedicated to meeting the needs of those impacted by the prohibitive costs of feminine hygiene products and mobility devices. It seems an odd pairing, but when our founder, Carrie Ford, learned about period poverty in other countries, she knew there were pockets of the United States that had similar issues. Not a Luxury Ltd. was born from this consideration.

One day, she came across a woman who was in need of a new mobility device. She had progressively worsening mobility and her insurance placed strict restrictions on coverages for a new device that would help her transition to new mobility.

As a soon-to-be physician, Carrie could not leave out this population of the community. She knew of several people, both young and seasoned, who required mobility devices. The thought that they may be struggling like this woman led her to revise Not a Luxury’s mission to include those impacted by prohibitive costs of mobility devices as well.

Her long-term goal is to aid efforts to make prosthetic devices more accessible. Prior to learning of the woman who needed an assistive mobility device, she learned that prosthetics geared towards running were not considered necessary items and therefore many insurance plans do not cover these devices. She believes people should be encouraged to do health maintenance activities, not financially denied access to the tools to do them.
